I am sitting in my 8th period class working with them on computer applications. Many students are disengaged. Many of them are goofing off. Many of them are distracting themselves with smart phones. I’ve heard a couple of them say they are bored. I want to scream at those students.
There are 2 or 3 focused students working on their craft in this class of 26. Those few students are passionate even on this Monday afternoon. They realize one thing. Time is their greatest asset. How do you get students to realize there is no time like now to create, be alive, try something new, be someone unique, or start a business? It is a question I struggle with daily as a teacher.
"How do you get students to realize there is no time like NOW to create, be alive, try something new, be someone unique, or start a business?"
I can tell when a student is ready to move on an idea. I have seen the passion in their eyes. They have clarity. They are driven. They will win. Too often, I see students who are lazy and apathetic day in and day out. Waiting. Wasting their greatest asset. They don’t understand that the powers that be have learned how to take their attention… and keep it. They don’t understand that there is big money steering them away from their education. They don’t get that they are playing into the hands of others by giving in to these distractors.
"They don’t understand that there is big money steering them away from their education."
This in my opinion is partially the fault of the current education system. We burn out our students by hammering them day after day with knowledge. A lot of times, worthless knowledge that is not applicable to their lives. The education system just keeps moving along without being challenged. Students become lemmings. They find a screen and look at it mindlessly letting it remove their creativity.
Those few students that are driven are the ones I keep my eyes on. They are the students who get it. It being they know they have a limited time on this earth. It being that nobody really gives a crap about whether they win or lose. They are fearless. That find a way to either put up with the BS of education systems or create their own ways to learn. These are the strong ones. There could be so many more if we change the system. Share your ideas about change. It is drastically needed in our system. Our students are not being pushed or led to be creative. We are producing zombie-like lemmings and nobody is doing anything about it. Stand up and #disrupteducation!
