Where did high school go so wrong. I am sitting in a professional development day (PD) right now and hearing the same thing I’ve heard for my entire career. A bunch of jargon and big fancy terms. I hear a lot of talk and no action. I hear a very conservative effort to “change” our students. “We need to help out all our students for success” We need to find out why “many of our students are tardy.” Blah Blah Blah. The entire room is disengaged. Everyone in the audience including myself are on their devices and minds are wandering. I am shoved in an auditorium with seats worse than an economy seat on a cheap airline. I am to sit and listen to nothing of much importance for 2 to 3 hours straight. Are you kidding me!? Is this real!?
This is where I am convinced that education in the public realm is a joke. We are trying to teach our teachers in the worst way possible. Sit down, shut up, and listen. It has been proven over and over that is the absolute worst way to educate somebody.
Here is how I see the way a PD day should go… Any meeting to pass along information should not last longer than 10 minutes. That’s it. We live in a Google world. I can find facts on anything. If it can be sent in an email...send it administration!!!!
Teachers should collaborate regarding their craft. I am a business teacher. I have a lot to learn from my colleagues. Unfortunately, I am not trusted enough to work with them. How do I know this…. by the actions of the administration. If you trusted me as a professional, you would let me work with my colleagues as much as possible. Look at any successful school model out there. There is a large amount of teacher collaboration.
My final rant is reframing WHY things are happening. Our administration wants to “reduce tardies.” Do they even know WHY people are late?! THE MEETING THIS MORNING ACTUALLY STARTED 15 MINUTES LATE! If the organization doesn’t respect timely meetings, how do you think the teachers and students will view time!? The number one reason people are late or absent is because the meeting or class is boring or meaningless. So maybe we should start looking at why we are teaching all our students the EXACT SAME SUBJECTS in the same way we’ve been taught, our parents have been taught, and even our grandparents have been taught?
It’s time to disrupt traditional education!
