I am currently sitting in my Management class observing students while they create their online portfolios. I have told them this is real education that will help them succeed. While many of them are working diligently on creating their online brand, many of them are distracted, bored, or outright refusing to do it. I wonder why? I actually have a hypothesis to why. The high school I work at is so disconnected from real experiences, most students have been programmed to not care about this stage in their education. They see any assignment to just another thing I have to do to get a diploma. It is sad. I see school as so much more, but you can't blame them. Opportunities in my high school are very limited to the outside world. School administrators have placed so much red tape on making interactions with the community that it takes too much time and effort for educators to work through. We have become detached from our local communities. Students don't see the reality of their education. Real learning occurs with real outside sources. Local communities and schools should work hand in hand. Learning from each other. Solving problems and making the community stronger. The first step I see in this happening is having school administrators in schools break down the walls and eliminate red tape. Do this and watch your students, teachers, and community grow stronger!
